Eurovision Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.
A new initialism emerged several months after the start of the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is unique to Gaza, according to doctors such as paediatricians. Normally, it is rare for doctors to treat a young patient who has been bereaved of their complete family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been wiped out and the number of children who have lost limbs surpasses that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing normal about scores of doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with reports of children being systematically aimed at.
A Living Nightmare Despite a Reported Truce
Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that violations are continuing. Officials has denied these allegations, consistent with how it disavows all charges it is charged with. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its declared purpose of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, although at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, apparently, is what unity manifests as.
Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be treated differently.
A Double Standard
Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that global media are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.
The Contest Continues Amidst Unimaginable Suffering
The contest turns 70 next year – nearly twice the current lifespan of someone in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the camp joy it once represented. A contest that once promoted togetherness has now become a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
