US air traffic controllers are increasingly looking for second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work without pay during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has stated.

"The controllers are wearing thin," the official told Fox News on the weekend, as some flights were halted on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are considered essential workers, were told to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But a number have been absent, causing terminals to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has added to delays due to climate and other issues.

More than 3,000 US flights were delayed on Sunday, and the secretary stated he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I observe the pressure," Duffy said in an discussion on a weekend program, noting that he had met with several controllers to listen to their concerns firsthand.

"They are pursuing second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I drive Uber, am I able to find an alternative of earnings to cover expenses?'" he continued.

The secretary further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airfields said travel would be delayed due to a lack of workers - among the peak since the shutdown started.
