Gas Detonation Claims 3 Police Officers While Executing Eviction Action in the Verona Area
Three police officers perished and at least 15 people got wounded in what appears to be intentional detonation from gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.
Event Timeline
The explosion occurred as officers and emergency crews approached the property near Verona to carry out an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.
All three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri military police.
Investigation Developments
A man and a woman were arrested at the location and a third person who escaped subsequent to the blast was apprehended soon after. Each of them have been admitted to medical facility.
The explosion could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and images from the location displayed the property reduced to a pile of rubble.
“We are in a period of mourning,” said the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who added that efforts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the past.
Background and Motive
The leader of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the residence was subject to an eviction order due to debts accrued by the three owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to speak to the siblings who had locked themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the residents set off the detonation.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno told the media.
A propane tank had been activated, and the detonation directly hit our members,” he added.
Petrol bombs were also discovered at the residence, the Interior Minister said.
Impact Assessment
The wounded by the blast comprised eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.
The official believed the detonation had happened on a level above the access point and told reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the incident, he said officers had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the propane tanks being turned on”.
Community Reaction
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants told local news, noting that the three had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
The Defense Minister Guido Crosetto joined other political leaders in honoring the three men who had been killed in the service of their country.
