Manchester United Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, is known as a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing will be seen as a marquee coup for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. According to reports, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought further activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
