The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track

This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by Critical Role, unveiled an exciting opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and criminals kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at several heart-wrenching backstories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.

Overall, the intro appears stunning. However, I felt that an element was lost in the song choice.

The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the official score of that title, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.

Personally, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.

The show's opening with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, Critical Role has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its intro appears as one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
