Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Passion So Long As The Three Lions' Ace Leaves His Ego Outside.
One snub proved sufficient. A second one and it might have appeared spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, who is far too wily not to know that securing World Cup glory will likely need the involvement of Jude Bellingham, even if it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to blend into the strategic frameworks and player rankings necessary with England now that he is back in the manager's welcoming fold.
The manager desires his aggressive mentality, his passion, but it is about channeling it appropriately. Skill matters but the squad know from bitter experience that there is consequences when fame takes over. Still, a message has been sent.
The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after being left out of last month’s squad. He observed England book their place at the tournament in his absence. He saw Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He heard Tuchel mention appreciating the team's dynamism and values. Inevitably, Bellingham has reacted in champion style, netting important strikes for Real Madrid against Barcelona and Juventus. Inclusion was a must; a second snub would have left his World Cup hopes in serious doubt.
The hope is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham concentrating on frightening rivals instead of his own colleagues. Ultimately, in purely sporting terms, there is little benefit to creating tension with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has made him realize that an international career is a precious, precarious thing. The coach, on his side, can now throw a protective shield around the 22-year-old after showing that he is willing to take tough decisions.
“There is no problem with him, there is no problem with the character,” Tuchel commented. “Jude displays that aggression. It takes a sharp mentality to succeed at the top that he has. We all must help him and establish a setting which he can use his drive in matches and towards the goals we are striving for as a team.”
Bellingham dominated the spotlight at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s meaningless matches against one opponent and the other. Who else? Well, what about another talent? This is another prodigious playmaker who needs coaching. He has been absent for England since spring and has found it hard to hit the heights recently but Tuchel could not ignore the player after his performance in his club's victory versus Borussia Dortmund this week.
The issue, though, is how to use the attacking talents at the team's disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be a good argument to pick another youngster once he is fit after a persistent groin problem. Is selecting multiple creators to the World Cup be excessive? The previous manager never found the right blend at Euro 2024. He compromised by squeezing both stars into the same XI, cramping Harry Kane’s game as a result.
It seems unlikely the current manager repeating that if it hurts the team harmony. Space exists for one No 10, with quick attackers on the wings. Clear roles is beneficial. Bellingham is selected as a central attacker. The new call-up, selected for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will vie with another player as a No 6. Additionally, there is no wide role for the City star, who must play through the middle. The coach prefers him close to Kane. “It does not make sense to ask Phil: ‘You are needed on the pitch but no spot exists on your best position, can you play left wing? Can you play other flank?’” he said. “He is to feature in the central attacking zone, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this vision about him for years. I think it suits him best.”
He conceded there are times when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “One senses as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight for the game, then obviously an issue exists, be it his role, the setup, it's unclear.
“In my opinion he is additionally so used to playing for Man City in a particular setup, with a defined role. I think he benefits a lot from clarity. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly should I turn? When should I to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?
Tuchel discussed Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and the other drilling in strikes from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of 60 players. Several players, others, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his excellent performances for City at defense. Intrigue abounds.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in this squad. Fascinatingly, Tuchel suggested using the playmaker as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or the other. Other options, the United forward, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are other options if he be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for testing tactics.
At the same time, it is also a chance to foster the understanding with Bellingham flowing. It is remarkable that you have to go back to Bellingham setting up Kane to score in a friendly win against Scotland in September 2023 to discover the one and only time in many appearances for England when the pair linked up for a goal. Tuchel will know that the two stars only passed to each other a single time during England’s draws with Denmark and Slovenia at the European Championship. Their partnership is missing.
“This is where at some point it becomes the duty of the individuals,” he stated. He does not shy away to speak frankly. There is still a feeling of the player being on trial. He cannot even be guaranteed to begin against Serbia and Albania. The manager wants Bellingham onside but he will be monitoring him closely. Set aside self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a powerful squad into an even better one.
